Biography of William Jack
William Jack (1834-1924) was a graduate of the University who was Professor of Mathematics from 1879 to 1909. He was awarded an LLD in 1875 and the William Jack Prize is name for him.
Born in Stewarton, Jack graduated MA from the University in 1853 and went on to study at Cambridge. He was HM Inspector of Schools in the South West of Scotland District 1860 to 1866; Professor of Natural Philosophy at Owen's College Manchester, 1866 to 1870; Editor of the Glasgow Herald from 1870 to 1876 and a member of the publishing firm Macmillan & Co from 1876 until 1879.
Jack married the daughter of John Pringle Nichol, Regius Professor of Astronomy at the University, who was the sister of John Nichol, Regius Professor of English Literature.
