Biography of John Hill
John Hill was born in Renfrew and studied Medicine at the University. His studies were interupted by the First World War, in which he served with the Cameron Highlanders, but he returned to graduate MB ChB (1919) and MD (1936). He joined Cunard as a ship's surgeon during the 1920s and sailed in 1940 on the secret maiden voyage to New York of the Queen Elizabeth.
On 17 June 1940 Hill was among at least 3,500 who were killed when the Lancastria, a Cunard vessel that had been requisitioned as a troopship, was bombed and sunk off the coast of France.
