Biography of John Doby
John Doby (d c 1498) became joint Principal of the University with John Goldsmith in 1478, when Walter Bunch was removed from the post. He was Principal again from 1490 to 1498 and was elected Rector in 1491. He was Vice Dean and Bursar in 1490.
Doby is believed to have been a graduate of the University of Cologne and was Rector of Kirkpatrick Fleming.
The administration of the University was reformed during Doby's time as Principal. A notary was elected to make a record of every conclusion, constitution, dispensation, and other documents concerning the University. A faculty promotor was appointed to oversee lawsuits. There were changes made to the opening date and length of the sessions, with the new session starting on the feast of St Remy on 1 October and lasting until the feast of St Giles on 1 September. The powers of the Dean were strengthened, with the introduction of penalties for those who failed to uphold University statutes or obey the Dean's instructions.
