Biography of Thomas Graham Baron Lynedoch
Thomas Graham, 1st Baron Lynedoch, (1748-1843) was Rector of the University from 1813 to 1815.
Graham studied at Christ Church, Oxford, travelled in Europe and then returned to Scotland to manage his Perthshire estates. He became a Whig MP in 1794.
In 1793 Graham joined the army as a volunteer and he served with great distinction in a number of campaigns during the conflict with France, most notably with Lord Wellington during the Peninsula War. He returned to Scotland a hero in 1814 and was created Baron Lynedoch. He was one of the founders of the United Services Club in 1817.
