Biography of Peter Mackay
Peter MacKay- Master of Arts volume, 1852
Peter Mackay graduated MA from the University of Glasgow in 1852, and became one of the founders and first Director of The Mackay School of Valparaíso, Chile.
Born in Argyle, son of Donald Mackay, Peter obtained his MA at the University of Glasgow and worked as a Mathematics Tutor at the Free Church Normal Seminary in Glasgow, before immigrating to Chile in 1857. He became one of the main founders, and the first Director of The Mackay School in Valparaíso. Formerly part of the Valparaíso Artisan School Society, it was founded in 1857 initially to educate the children of those English-speaking immigrants who worked in the factories and railroads of Valparaíso. It is still considered among the best academic institutions for boys in the Valparaíso Region of Chile.
