Biography of Sir James King Baronet
Sir James King
Sir James King (1830-1911) was Dean of Faculties, 1879 to 1882 and 1904 to 1910. He was also Chancellor's Assessor, and was awarded an honorary LLD.
Born in Glasgow, King was educated at Glasgow High School and the University before joining the family business, the Hurlet & Campsie Alum Co. He had many other business interests, and was Chairman of the Clydesdale Bank and the Caledonian Railway Co.
King was a member of the Town Council from 1874 to 1876, and Lord Provost from 1886 to 1889. Among the other important offices he held in Glasgow were those of Dean of Guild, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Clyde Trust. He was knighted in 1887, and created a baronet in 1888.
