John Adam Gib Burton was born on 7 January 1888 in Edinburgh to John, a minister. He moved to Glasgow at the age of six and was educated at Glasgow High School before attending the University to study for a medical degree.

Burton studied subjects such as Botany, Zoology and Materia Medica and won a prize in Zoology during his first year. After graduating he became house surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Glasgow before becoming the resident casualty surgeon. In 1912 he joined the staff of the Pathological Institute and worked under the guidance of John Teacher. Upon the outbreak of war Burton undertook service from in France, Gallipoli, Mesopotamia, and the North-West Frontier of India in the Waziristan Campaign. After returning from war Burton returned to the medical profession, undertaking the practice and teaching of pathology and surgery. He became a Fellow of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1922, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1925. In 1934 he became chief of surgical wards and was elected Professor of Surgery in the University of Glasgow a year later. Whilst at the University he served on the Senate and Faculty, assisting the Dean with arranging the education of graduates returning from the war. He occupied the St Mungo Chair at the Royal Infirmary until he retired in 1953. He was awarded an LLD by the University in 1954.
