Biography of Alexander Gilmour
Sergeant Alexander Gilmour was a student in the Arts Faculty, 1937 to 1940, and a member of the Royal Air Force Reserve.
Gilmour left Glasgow to join No 142 Squadron as a pilot, and was acting Captain on Wellington bomber Z1292. According to Sergeant Frank Sumner, interviewed for the Battle of Britain Historical Society website, Z1292 flew from Grimsby on a bombing raid to Hamburg on 30 November 1941, but was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire near Kiel. The crew were buried in the German garrison cemetery and, after the war, their bodies were exhumed, identified, and laid to rest at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Kiel.
