Biography of James Aitchison
James Aitchison (1899-1968) was Director of Dental Surgery from 1947 and the University's first Professor of Dental Surgery from 1951 to 1964.

He was appointed Professor of Dental Surgery at the University of Cairo in 1938 but was unable to take up the post owing to the dangerous political situation there. Instead, he became dental officer for West Ham and he was superintendent of casualty services and then controller of civil defence for West Ham, North Woolwich and the docks area of East Ham during the Second World War.
