Biography of Robert Hamilton
Robert Hamilton was the son of John Hamilton, a rum and wine merchant nicknamed 'Johnny Sma' Bottles' who held various offices in Glasgow including Bailie and Provost. Through his mother, he was related to the successful Bogle merchant family. After studying Latin and Greek at the University from 1801 until 1804, Robert Hamilton seems to have followed family tradition and become a merchant in Jamaica. He died in London in 1840.
