Biography of Malcolm Howat
Malcolm Howat was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv) jointly with his partner, Margaret, from the University of Glasgow during the Commemoration Day ceremony on 15th June 2016. This award marks their support which has led to some of the most significant cancer research breakthroughs made at the University and also their philanthropic work which extends into many other areas.
In 1982 he founded Howco Group PLC and established the company as a global supplier to the oilfield services sector as chairman and CEO. The company has a varied range of activities from supply chain management to precision manufacturing and the distribution of speciality metals. It operates in USA, Canada, Singapore, China, Norway, Dubai, England and Scotland.
He also co-founded the Howat Foundation with Margaret Howat which supports cancer research at the University of Glasgow, including The Paul O'Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre. It also support a small Edinburgh charity named CCLASP - Children with Cancer and Leukaemia Advice and Support for Parents. In 2013 the Howat Foundation made a large donation to the Beatson Pebble Appeal which was recognised by Sir Alex Ferguson.
