Biography of Alan James Hird
Alan James Hird graduated BSc 1937 and MB ChB 1940. Having been Dux of Glasgow Academy, he attended the University of Glasgow and was awarded numerous prizes.
After holding junior hospital appointments he joined the Royal Navy, and his five years as Surgeon Lieutenant included long spells in the North Atlantic. On return to civil life he obtained Membership of the North Royal College of Physcicians in 1947 and in the same year was appointed a Lecturer in the Department of Medicine on the staff of Professor J W McNee. Alan died in a climbing accident near Kinlochleven in 1949 and his friends instituted a prize in his memory.
